The Hound attacked Montag because he murdered Beatty and threatened to murder 2 other firemen.

Montag defended himself by using the flamethrower to set the Hound on fire.

Montag realized that Beatty wanted to die, that he was asking for it and that he wouldn't have said all of the stuff he did if he didn't want to die.

Montag ended up going to a gas station so they couldn't track him back to Professor Faber's.

When he crossed the street he realized that a car was chasing after him that he thought was the police, but it was only a bunch of teenagers pulling a small prank.
