Something Interesting

Something I found interesting recently was a singing parrot. I was scrolling around Snapchat and found the video. It was a parrot singing Chandelier by Sia. This video had to be one of the funniest videos I have ever seen!

Immigrants In Our Own Land Analysis

a. Jessica Parra's blog entry about the poem is honest and talks about the reality behind the poem. She gives good examples on how the theme is "expectations vs. reality". Jessica also gives good details on her belief of what the main image is, which in her eyes is comparing immigrants coming to a new land with the immigrants entering a prison.
b. My answers to the questions compare to Jessica's because I believe the theme is false promises. I would say this is the theme that compares to Jessica's because she believes the theme is "expectation vs. reality" and false promises are the immigrants have their own fantasies about the new land providing new opportunities, but then reality hits them. The promises made by America were false and now immigrants have to face the consequences. The tone is very emotional because the detail it gives about how the character is feeling can really connect to you. You can feel how disappointed Jimmy Santiago is just by paying attention to the adjectives and details given. The mood is very sympathetic because you feel bad for the immigrants facing these problems because they didn't know what else to do. Some devices include metaphors such as the line "like scholars use glasses and books to reach the world" or a hyperbole such as "The doctors don't care, our bodies decay, our minds deteriorate, we earn nothing of value".
c. I would have to change my mind about the theme "false promises" to 'deceit" because the immigrants were deceived. They were all told lies by the people in America. They were all told something else when the people in the new land new exactly hat they were doing.

My Mad Dream of An Essay

Remember that time you ate that spicy burger just before you went to bed on the night before the big Halloween party. Oh, that weird dream you had about the 2016 presidential election. When you woke up you couldn't quite remember the gory details, but after reading "On Self-Reliance" and "A Sound of Thunder" it's all coming back to you now.

The dream started badly. You were in line with your family at Walmart waiting to be sent to the library. Everywhere you looked there were posters of president-elect Waddle, looking like a crazy cheetah who could eat a whole chair.

Suddenly, there was Ralph Waldo Emerson telling you, "Greatness appeals to the future". You realized that you have something to contribute to the world so you decided to fight. But it wasn't easy. First you had to put on a fancy dress and hat and then you had to make a monkey go back in time to the mall so you could convince people to learn about the candidates and the deportation of immigrants.

But right there in the mall there was a giant bear and it started shouting at everyone. People started to cry. You grabbed a ball from a nearby shop and yelled "we have the power to be the bigger person". Everyone stopped and listened, so you kept going.

We as the next generation will change the world. Whether or not you believe so, we will do it. If you choose not to do your work, so be it. If you choose to make bad choices, so be it. Responsibility is inevitable and if we make the choice of facing responsibility now, determines our future. Even making that small decision of ditching a party to do a homework assignment shapes our future decisions. One experience I have had with this is I wrote an essay the day before it was due because I procrastinated. I sacrificed quality time with my family to do it and now I now that I have to make the right choices of doing my work beforehand so I can have fun. "On Self-Reliance" uses the example in hid first quote "Our acts our angels are, or good or ill, Our fatal shadows that walk by us still." This quote shows an example of the choices we make because it says that they can be good or bad, but it's really up to us. "A Sound of Thunder" shows a classic example of the choices we make now influence our future. With Eckels making the mistake of going off the path and literally changing the future, but not for good. It's up to us to make things better in the future by making he right choices now.

Emerson's Child

Yourself can be a hard word to describe. Emerson's definition of "yourself" may be as subtle as "someone who believes they can do whatever they want to do" or something a little more complex such as "a person who shows who they really are because they aren't following in the footsteps of another person". Whatever Emerson's definition of "yourself" is, I'm sure it has meaning. Whenever others aren't looking, I am genuinely my true self. If people don't like the real me, I miss the part where that's my problem. I make fun of people who are fake, I cant say it is a good thing, but I do it anyway.
I am just as crazy, and funny and weird as my friends think I am and I couldn't think of myself as anyone else. I feel as though the people who have a lot of friends or who are "popular" don't have friends that really care about the real them, they only hang out with the fake them. Behind closed doors I am still the same Jordan as you see at school, but I have to say I don't really associate myself with the "popular" people because their definition of "fun" is a little different from mine.
My true nature is a fun, weird and enthusiastic person. Although I am occasionally serious, it usually has to do with my schoolwork. If I am going to have friends, the nature of my personality remains the same because if I am not myself then I am not happy. I have to say I have the ability to be a huge bully, but I choose to remain the good person I am. What I think about others is I hate it when people try to be someone they're not. I can't help making fun of someone if I have seen the real side of them but have also experienced their fake side. I get irritated if someone I know tries to be different because I know deep down they aren't really happy with who they are because they are hiding their true selves, The only reason you would be someone you are not is because you aren't happy with yourself and you are afraid of being rejected if you do show your true self.
What I really want is for people to be who they really are. Being in high school, I have more anger on my shoulders than I should carry because of the people I see everyday, but it's not up to me to tell them who to be. I want people to be true to themselves and show their friends who they really are. If people weren't so afraid of rejection and judgment, society would be a much better place. I feel like it is the responsibility of others who are true to themselves to teach others to be who they want to be and not to follow in someone else's footsteps. The reason I say "teach" instead of "tell" is because it's going to take time for people to accept that change.
Emerson's wisdom makes great points about society. High school is an obstacle everybody faces in their life, unfortunately some people choose to avoid it by dropping out. Even though I do still try to dress like the "trends" you cant help it because it is a part of life, it's how we evolve. I don't wear skinny jeans or Jordan's because other people do. I wear them because I like them and that is what Emerson is trying to say. Emerson tries to say to do what you want, but not for others. but for yourself and I can connect with that. To get along with others they have to like me for who I am and if they don't I usually avoid them because 95% of the time they are very annoying. I cant say everybody likes me, but I know who my real friends are if I can text one friend for a pen and have the whole group show up just to make sure I get one.

Team Vocab

This presidential election has transformed into a battle, with venomous attacks from both aggravating parties. Hillary has remained stolid, and I personally want to punch Trump in the proboscis. His supporters have slowly dissolved and the ones who have remained are hypnotized into believing America will be great again. This is a melancholy moment in American history because soon one of these candidates will be president. I earnestly believe that neither candidate should be eligible for office.

Literature Analysis #2

1. The book I am reading is the Death Cure. The Death Cure is the third book to the Maze Runner series and it is the final trial. The plot of the novel is about a boy named Thomas who is fighting back against a company named WICKED. If you don't what WICKED is it stands for World Catastrophe Killzone Department and their main goal is to find a cure for the Flare (mind altering disease) using immunes and placing them in trials. These trials then create variables which allow WICKED to form a blueprint for the cure.. In the first two books The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, they were two trials that Thomas and other main characters had to face forced upon them by WICKED. This book is based on Thomas and his friends escape from WICKED and their journey into the city where they face the threat of the Flare and have to remain in hiding until they figure out what they can do to fight back. During the Death Cure, Thomas and his friends were faced with the choice of getting their memories back. While others decided to get their memories back, Thomas and his friends Minho and Newt chose not to. With this decision they unexpectedly escaped WICKED headquarters and journey with their new friends Brenda and Jorge to the city of Denver. The journey to Denver led them to realize a horrible truth about their friend Newt, but there was nothing they could do about it. In the city, they encounter their former friend Gally who tries to recruit them into the Right Arm, a group dedicated to taking WICKED down.

2. I would have to say the theme of the novel is horror. I could also sat the theme is death since it seems to be occurring so often. Throughout the story we see the devastating loss of a friend and the madness of others as they are infected with the Flare. I would say horror because the way the book describes what the Flare does to people calling them Cranks and that when they reach the final stage they being going crazy and mad with hunger for human flesh, kind of like zombies.

3. I can see James Dashner as the author who loves gore and reads graphic novels in his spare time. He sleeps late, gets up to exercise, then walks around the city with no worries, wanders into comic book stores or places like Hot Topic. His morning would consist of coffee all day because t is his favorite drink.

A Hug Is Nearly A Gun Spelled Backwards

When we compare the two ideas of personal relations and patriotism, the first thing we think of is who do we love more? E.M Forster's opinion that personal relations are more important than patriotism is a good one. When I think about patriotism, I think about loyalty, and when I think about loyalty, I think about who truly loves me. Personal relations play a huge part in everyday society and frankly, it helps us function. I believe that personal relations are more important than patriotism because I love my country, but I can't say that my country loves me unconditionally and that it will always be there for me even when it is not. All I can think of is how superstitious or how cautious the government is and how it would lay down millions of peoples' lives before letting themselves fall.
I admit there are sacrifices to be made when fighting for your country, but you also make sacrifices for your family because you know they really care. Patriotism is the loyalty to your nation and personal relations is t he loyalty to your family; when comparing these two we see that often times with loyalty and making a choice, losses are involved and you cant take it back, so who is more willing to forgive you? Overall, I would have to agree with E.M Forster's belief that personal relations are more important than causes or patriotism and there is no denying that you are forced to form an opinion and if or when the time comes, you are forced to make a life-changing decision.

Vocab Paragraph

I feel that the teacher's use of colloquialism creates a comfortable classroom environment. The assignments given by other teachers make me feel like they are provoking their students. I also think the assignments given to us in other classes can be a little superfluous because it's information we may never use in life. This class provides a sense of catharsis and that can a comfortable feeling. I feel like the teacher really cares about what we think and we are learning jargon instead of other information that we are going to forget about in a couple of days or after an exam. When we were first introduced to the teacher and he used profanity, I felt like it was egregious, but over time it starts to make sense and we can relate to the situations when he is talking. The teacher doesn't use archaism, he isn't traditional and it is nice to experience that kind of change in education. I have learned that what were are learning in this class is important including taking a step into the 21st century. I admit I think a majority of my classes are frivolous, but Idon't think this class is because I am actually learning something I will remember because it is of value. You don't realize it until you experience it that teachers using profanity is taboo and I have learned that profanity can also have some value because it allows us to express how we are really feeling. I can't say I am scrupulous, but I can saying I am learning in this class.

Bad Words

I can't really figure out what makes words bad. Overtime words have evolved and so have their uses and definitions. Words like "gay" used to mean happy, but is now a slang word commonly used by teenagers to describe things that are "lame" or "dumb". I think what makes words "bad" is how aggressive they sound. If you think to yourself about all of the "bad" words used, you notice how aggressive they sound while others have more of a calm tone.  I think it is because people believe the "bad" words we use are unprofessional and they put bad impressions on people than those who don't use bad words. The idea of good/bad words decreases between people because as people use these "bad" words, their language barrier diminishes because they used those words in a casual conversation so much they don't use actual words needed to understand someone else.  The appropriate use of euphemism is most likely when you're angry. You don't hear people say "well that hurt" if they get hit with something or cut themselves, they use other words to express their anger through those words. Euphemism becomes phony or confusing when it used in daily conversations. You hear more and more kids say "well this f***ing s*** is f***ing stupid..." and so on and you just stare at them trying to figure out what the heck they were trying to say. I say just use real words now and say your other words later.

Satire

Why does everyone have to be racist or discriminatory? I hate when people are described using words that are very disrespectful and hurtful. Words we commonly hear when they don't like someone's race or gender or ethnicity seem to get used a lot more often than we would like to hear.  My solution this problem is having everyone's vocal cords cut. If we cant talk then we'll just have to use sign language. They may try to say words using their hands, but it wouldn't come out the same as if we had heard the tone in someone's voice. If we cut the vocal cords in everybody's throat then the problem will be solved. If you're caught writing anything offensive, jail time. Any age, any race, any gender, you're gone, no second chances. Voices can make a difference because even the tone in someone's voice can sound threatening even when it wasn't meant to. If we can get this done, a lesson will be taught to the next generation and so on to discontinue this hateful use of language.

Literature Analysis Questions #1

1. The plot of "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold is about a 14 year old girl named Susie Salmon who was murdered by her neighbor. The story begins with her murder and continues to escalate as cops are searching for evidence and her body while she watches all of this from heaven. Susie then meets a new friend in her heaven and their "lives" continue up there as her family and killer's lives continue down on earth.
2. The theme of the novel would probably have to be deception. The main character in the story and her family are all being deceived by their neighborhood. He is seen as a normal, lonely man so he is seen as an unlikely suspect. Through the book, Susie goes back to several scenes involving the man who murdered her by luring her into  "clubhouse" and describing what he did with the weapon that killed her and the remnants of her body. Deception is a huge issue in this novel; not only did her own neighbor killer, but Susie's mother had an affair with the detective on the case.
3. I imagine the authors morning routine as peaceful and quiet. She would be an early bird and she would just grab a cup of coffee and sit on the couch reading a book, possibly her own. Alice Sebold seems like the type of person who understands peace which is why she wrote a book such death and finding peace in it. In  the book She writes, "As I stood to go back to the duplex, they took wing and followed me. Had my brother really seen me somehow, or was he merely a little boy telling beautiful lies?" She puts the peace in a thing so negative. Alice Sebold must be a person who sees the world in a different way and her mornings may consist of a thought process seeing something she never saw before. In in excerpt she gives a character some wisdom by saying "'Like snowflakes,', Franny said, 'none of them the same and yet each one, from where we stand, exactly like the one before.'"  Another excerpt she found peace in when writing was, "The truth was that the line between the living and the dead could be, it seemed, murky and blurred."
4. One of the literary techniques seen in this book is characterization. An example of characterization is, "When Len Fenerman had gone door to door in the neighborhood he had found nothing remarkable at George Harvey's. Mr. Harvey was a single man who, it was said, had meant to move in  with his wife. She had died sometime before this. He built dollhouses for specialty stores and kept to himself." I think connects to the theme deception because I personally think people like this are particularly sketchy. Another literary technique is imagery. Imagery is very common in this novel such us, " Mr. Harvey made me lie still underneath him and listen to the beating of his heart and the beating of mine. How mine skipped like a rabbit, and how his thudded, a hammer against his cloth." This imagery compares to the theme deception because Susie's heart was descriptively heavy and she didn't know it would ever come to this. A literary technique in this novel is also alliteration. "This went to his strangeness by the standards of many in the neighborhood but not by my father's standards." This compares to the theme because not many people can see past how unusually normal some people are it did not get past Susie's father.

Response to "Consience of a Hacker"

What I like about the "Consience of a Hacker" is that it's truth. We're all the same, we all make mistakes, we're all criminals. Everybody in this world thinks they've done nothing wrong, but in reality they are constantly making mistakes. Saying we are all the same is right because we are; it doesn't matter if we are good or bad because we were all raised the same. What I liked most about this document is when he says we can't be stopped because after all, we're the same. I like this because he was right, they can't stop everybody from doing what they're doing because the chain will continue because we're the same.

A Modest Proposal Response

This completes the elements for satire because there is a large use of irony and sarcasm. Johnathan Swift begins by saying how women do these horrible, savage things to innocent babies by aborting them, but Swift thinks eating them isn't so bad. He talks about roasting them or putting them in stew and adding salt so it's delicious and nutritious. I think he uses sarcasm where he is pretty much saying if anybody has any better ideas to get cheap nutritious food, just let him know. His use of diction, syntax and tone affects how he sends the message because he is very serious. When he gave an example why it would good because someone else said it was delicious really changed his tone in the message.

Everything's Amazing

The satirical elements I noticed from Louis CK's video is irony. What I find ironic about it is he may be in fact one of those people who don't take a moment to realize they are sitting in a chair in the sky. He makes jokes about them and adds humor to the situation and realization that they're 30,000 feet in the air. Another element I noticed was that he seems to ridicule the man's generation in a humorous way yelling about it and telling the audience how much we take advantage of the things we have today. We live in an amazing world, yet we don't appreciate it enough.

Examples of Satire

1. I think Donald Trump more than qualifies as satire. His constant use of criticism towards others is jaw dropping. Not only is he known for exposing others, but it is ironic how he is trying to "make America great again", yet he seems to be causing this constant issue with not keeping his rude, unnecessary comments to himself. Although he is liked for speaking is mind, he makes others look like he is superior by pointing out their flaws and making it seem like he's done nothing wrong.

2. Another use of satire is TMZ. TMZ is built on exposing gossip about celebrities and trying to ridicule them. Their use of irony is consistent by causing problems that didn't exist based on rumors that were never true. TMZ hides this by trying to add humor to the situation they started.

3. I would have to say this is satire because Ellen seems to be making fun of Adele. Although she only does it for laughs, I certainly think this is funny. She finds the humor in a serious situation.

Response to The Right To Your Opinion and the Laughing Heart

The readings given to us I found very eye opening. As I was reading I realized I never really thought if things that way. I always saw the world in a basic way such as "you can't do this or you can't do that". I found it was important to know your rights when you wanna do something. Just as knowing your rights when stating your own opinion. No one has a right to tell you your opinion is wrong, but it is their right to give evidence to support their opinion. I also noticed in the reading that when you learn about your rights, there is more to it than what is being presented. Knowing this, I now realize it  is good to research well before you take action in something you want to do. Reading The Laughing Heart I found it very inspirational. It made me think about how much we need to enjoy life because day by day we avoid death and the darkness. I really liked this poem because it was saying take the chances given to you and don't hold back. It's like a gift, even if you don't like it, you have to give it time and give it a chance sometimes.
